About Our Job

The External Equity and Accessibility Consultant is a strategic advisor and project manager dedicated to ensuring that DPL’s public-facing programs, services, and spaces are equitable, accessible, and community-responsive. This role collaborates across departments to remove systemic barriers, integrate inclusive design principles, and align initiatives with DPL’s IDEA commitments.

As a subject matter expert, the consultant provides equity and accessibility-focused guidance on public-facing projects, including collections, public spaces, programming, and technology. For example, they support accessibility audits, develop frameworks, and assess community impact to ensure that DPL’s external services meet the diverse needs of the communities it serves. This role collaborates across departments to remove systemic barriers, integrate inclusive design principles, and align initiatives with DPL’s IDEA commitments.

As a trusted equity and accessibility advisor, this position supports decision-makers in embedding equity principles into DPL’s public-facing functions. By providing strategic consultation, policy guidance, and technical expertise, the consultant ensures that DPL’s services, spaces, and programs are inclusive and accessible to all community members.

This position will report to the External Equity and Accessibility Manager. 

About Our Team

The Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Subdivision at DPL serves as a strategic consulting and organizational change team dedicated to embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of DPL’s internal operations and external services. With a focus on empowering staff, aligning policies and practices with equity principles, and fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging, the subdivision seeks to address systemic inequities and operationalize equity across DPL’s work. The team provides tailored support while ensuring equity is a shared responsibility across the organization.

What You Would Do

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support DPL leadership in operationalizing external equity and accessibility goals, aligning public-facing programs and services with long-term IDEA strategies.
  • Provide strategic consulting and technical guidance for public-facing projects, ensuring programs, services, and spaces align with accessibility and equity principles.
  • Design and implement frameworks, policies, and procedures that align accessibility and equity initiatives with DPL’s strategic priorities.
  • Ensure library programs and spaces meet accessibility standards, integrating regulatory guidelines and equity impact assessments into decision-making.
  • Advise on accessibility and equity audits of DPL’s public spaces, collections, and services, providing recommendations for systemic improvements.
  • Analyze external engagement data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for increasing accessibility and equity in public-facing services.
  • Partner with public-facing teams to incorporate community feedback and embed equity and accessibility principles into service delivery.
  • Analyze accessibility and equity metrics, using data to refine policies and develop continuous improvement strategies.
  • Work with Learning & Development (L&D) to develop training programs that strengthen staff competencies in external equity and accessibility.
  • Represent the IDEA subdivision in committees and task forces, advocating for inclusive public service models and ensuring IDEA considerations are integrated into department-wide strategic planning.

About You

  • A passionate advocate for systemic change who moves beyond compliance to create proactive, equity-centered services.
  • An equity and accessibility expert with experience in universal design, compliance frameworks (e.g., ADA), and inclusive service planning.
  • A strategic systems thinker who develops policies, frameworks, and processes to remove systemic barriers and sustain long-term accessibility and inclusion.
  • A data-informed consultant who evaluates service accessibility and community impact, translating findings into actionable recommendations for leadership and public-facing teams.
  • A trusted advisor to department leaders and teams, skilled in guiding public-facing departments through equity-focused and accessibility-driven service improvements.
  • An advocate for inclusive public spaces, committed to ensuring DPL’s programs, collections, and services are welcoming, accessible, and responsive to diverse community needs.
  • A strategic project manager with experience leading cross-functional, multi-constituent initiatives that advance equity, inclusion, diversity, and accessibility.
  • A skilled facilitator who can lead workshops, community discussions, and training sessions to integrate equity and accessibility.
  • A strong communicator who can develop clear, accessible messaging and facilitate conversations on barrier removal, community engagement, and inclusive service delivery.
  • A collaborative relationship-builder who works across departments, engaging leadership, staff, and external partners in meaningful, trust-based IDEA work.
  • An adaptive problem solver who can navigate resistance, address challenges with nuance, and develop solutions that foster inclusion and accessibility.
  • A lifelong learner who is self-reflective, open to growth, and committed to evolving IDEA practices based on new insights and community needs.
  • Able to navigate sensitive conversations with professionalism, discretion, and care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Disability Studies, Social Work, Public Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Development, Diversity Management, or a related field based on the job responsibilities. Master’s degree in a related field is desired. 
  • Has five (5) years’ experience performing full performance professional level duties within IDEA.   
  • One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post high school education. A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements.
